Traditional Tribal Name: Adawe | English Name: Ottawa | North American Indigenous People Group: Anishinaabe
The Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma
We, the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma, are a sovereign Indian nation. We are part of the larger Anishinaabe people, with deep roots in the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley. Our homelands also encompass areas in Kansas and Oklahoma where we have lived, governed, and sustained our community since the mid-nineteenth century. Over the centuries, we have entered into numerous treaties with the United States, most recently in 1862 and 1867, reaffirming our government-to-government relationship and our enduring rights as a distinct nation.
